9 Things I Can’t Live Without As A Jewelry Maker

9 Things I Can’t Live Without As A Jewelry Maker

I think it goes without saying that as a maker of any kind, you just accumulate supplies. And as a jewelry maker, I feel like that is multiplied times ten. After so many years making jewelry and being in "the biz", I thought I would make a list of my top items to help anyone that may be just starting out. Though not everything is jewelry-specific, I feel like these are my essentials for my handmade jewelry business.

What are the best supplies for running a jewelry business?

1. Pliers

This one is huge, which is why it is number one. Whether you wire wrap, string beads or do smith work, having a great set of pliers is essential to success. My go-to are these ones from Beadalon. I know they aren’t top of the line and that better ones exist but these ones just feel right ya know?

2. 3-Ring Binder

Pink three ring binder with decoration that says Master Plan

I got this tip from Metalsmith Society but this cheap three ring binder is THE BEST for organizing all my silver wire, bezel wire and sheet. I write the gauge and type on the top of the page protectors I use to store them and it’s so easy to see what I have and what I may need to restock.

3. Clip-on Phone Stand

If you’ve seen my Instagram you know I do a lot of videos of me working. This phone stand clips on to my work table and is perfect for holding my phone at the perfect angle. Once upon a time the light worked too but the power source was damaged somehow so I don’t use that anymore obviously.

4. Plastic Drawers

Jewelry makers will be able to relate - there is just so much STUFF associated with making it! No matter your jewelry medium of choice, you will accumulate lots of bits. I love this set of drawers to organize beads, small tools and charms. And to take my organization up a level, I used a label maker to label the drawers!

5. Measuring Tools

This one might seem obvious but when you’re making jewelry it kiiiiinda helps to know what size you are making it. Having a selection of tools like this sewing tape measure that is probably 30 years old and this ring sizer (grab yours here!) make it super easy to figure out.

6. Tabletop Photo Box

Obviously when you sell your products online you need to have good photos. I’ll be honest that I’m still learning the whole “good photos” thing but this little photo light box made specifically for small items definitely helps. Once upon a time I had one that was gigantic and had individual lights and I never used it because it was so awkward and bulky to set up. This one is tabletop sized and has the lights attached and powered via a USB so it is super convenient to use. I recently reshot all the pieces in my shop, take a look and tell me what you think!

7. Ring Light

If you make any kind of content on social media, you KNOW you need a ring light. I’m sure there are fancier or more expensive ones on the market but this one is perfect for me. It’s on a tripod so the height can be adjusted and you can also change the warmth of the light which is nice.

8. Bead Buddy Earring Maker

This is a recent purchase and not necessarily something you need but let me tell you I am OBSESSED. I love making earrings but with the cost of silver these days, buying premade ear wires can be expensive. It’s more cost efficient to have wire on hand since it can be used for lots of things. This tool turns 2 inch pieces of wire into ear wires with just a squeeze of the handles. So easy!

9. Safety Equipment

This one is not as fun as some of the other items but still so important, especially when doing torch work. My masks and fire extinguisher are my insurance policy for my own safety. Being safe when smithing has always been important to me, but it’s even more pressing to me now that I’m a new mom. I need to make sure I protect myself so that I can continue to be there for my little girl!

There you have it! My favorite items to help me make and run my business most efficiently. Do you make jewelry? What would you add?
