5 Reasons You Need To Be Doing Morning Pages

Have you heard about Morning Pages? It is a writing exercise that involves three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing every morning made popular by Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way. I discovered The Artist's Way and Morning Pages many years ago from a podcast.

Now to be honest, I've never fully completed the actual TAW program. I always seem to return to it in a hectic time in life and I have yet to get past week 3 (oops!). But Morning Pages? That's my bread and butter. I may not be able to commit to the rest of the exercises but when I commit to Morning Pages, I go all in and I always find them very transformational. Whether I'm working through problems in my life or looking to find new inspiration for ANBE, those three pages always seem to do the job.

Still not convinced?

Here are five reasons why I think you should try Morning Pages:

It boosts your creativity.

Morning Pages can help you tap into your inner creativity by allowing you to write without any inhibitions or restrictions. The whole purpose is to free write and then leave it alone. Having no expectations of the outcome is freeing and can help you work out problems, generate new ideas and find inspiration for your creative projects.

It reduces stress.

Writing out your thoughts and feelings can help you process and release any negative emotions or stressors you may be experiencing. Sometimes writing out something you don't want to say out loud or to another person is the most freeing. Morning Pages can be a great way to start your day with a clear and calm mind.

It will enhance your self-awareness.

Writing every morning can help you become more self-aware and reflective. You may discover patterns in your thoughts, behaviors, or emotions that you were previously unaware of. For example, when I decided I wanted to cultivate more gratitude in my life, I used my Morning Pages to write daily lists of things I was grateful for. This became so easy that now gratitude is my go-to when I start writing.

You will improve your writing skills.

Writing regularly can help you improve your writing skills and develop a writing habit. Morning Pages allow you to practice writing with no pressure to be perfect or produce a polished piece. And in a day and age when writing things by hand is a dying art, it can help keep your handwriting and hand muscles strong.

It will increase your productivity.

Starting your day with Morning Pages can help you clear your mind and focus on what’s important. It will help you prioritize your tasks and goals for the day, leading to increased productivity. Especially on a day when the to-do list seems endless, taking a minute to write out what is a priority is so helpful.

Overall, Morning Pages can be a valuable tool for anyone, especially if you are looking to improve your creativity, reduce stress, and enhance your self-awareness and productivity. Give it a try and see how it can benefit you!
